An Introduction to Clan Silverlock

Clan Silverlock is an interesting group.  Many, both within the Hoolequin Guild and outside of it, refer to them as treasure-hunters.  This is not entirely accurate.  Treasure-FINDERS, now… that’s a different story entirely.  They always seem to find or stumble over valuables, often making it seem effortless.  This ability/affinity/gift seems to transcend races and time periods within the clan.  It is often remarked on, occasionally envied, and while it has made the clan prosperous, it has not always made them liked.  While it is a matter of record that Balreth Silverlock, an elementalist and the Patriarch of the clan, was known to carry various keys and lockpicks with him to open treasure chests he found in his adventures across Tyria, he seemed to have a far better than average rate of return on these.  This is often regarded as the beginning of the legendary Luck of the Silverlocks.  Indeed, there is an oft-repeated, utterly baseless claim that “Silverluck is %$#@!”

The Silverlocks began as a group of Ascalonian Humans in Ascalon, shortly before the Searing, when the Charr invoked a terrible magic to ruin & conquer what they claimed as part of their ancient homeland from the Human kingdom of Ascalon.  The survivors of that attack and the subsequent migration to Kryta continued their travels across Tyria to Cantha and Elona, and the clan grew by both birth and adoption.

The roster of the clan became larger and more inclusive during the events of the Eye of the North, during the battles against the Destroyers; now known to be either parasites on or minions of the Elder Dragon Primordus.  This time period saw two changes in the clan.  The first was the addition of Battle Luck to the clan’s legend, with Balreth’s heavy use of the Red Arrow; calling on the longbow snipers of the Ebon Vanguard.  The second was the addition of the first non-Humans staking their claim to the name – and the Luck – of the Silverlocks.  Asura, Norn, and reluctantly, Charr were admitted to the clan, battling the Destroyers and other foes.  Later still, when some of the children of the Pale Tree, the Sylvari, expressed an interest in joining (“I saw you in my Dream!”), they were admitted to the clan as well.

The Silverlocks are strongly linked to Clan Naveah, another group in the Hoolequin Guild that started with an all-Human membership.  There have been multiple marriages between members of several races in the two clans over the centuries since the Searing.

There was an extended period of peace after the defeat of the Destroyer Queen; during this time, most of the friction among the various races within the clan has faded, although sometimes at the cost of additional friction with the other members of the native races of the members in question.

“Wait; your family’s from Ascalon… what the %$#@! are you doing running around with that CHARR?!”

Recently, the peace that Clan Silverlock had enjoyed for so long was shattered by the rise of several of the Elder Dragons and their lieutenants.  Members of the clan, from all of its member races, have stepped forward, finding their places among the heroes protecting Tyria once more.  And yes… they’re STILL finding treasure along the way, at higher rates than average.

Following records in these annals will record the adventures of several members of the clan; some well-known, others less so, prior to the publication of their tales.
