Lament of Icarus, Oil Painting, Herbert James Draper

This is my new painting, a most rare gift to myself, entitled “The Lament of Icarus.” I was able to acquire in the process of acquiring a gift for another. It was something I knew I wanted as soon as I saw it. My initial impressions were of a different sort: beings only concerned for the fallen after the fall. Something I can very much relate to. Then I began thinking about the story of Icarus even more and it really sank in. What is Icarus’ story all about? Hubris. Icarus was granted fake wings (Feathers and Wax) and was warned not to fly too close to the sun, for his wings would melt away and he would surely plummet and perish. What did he do? Precisely that. I have the same character flaw, but in more of a social and emotional context. My wings are made of Promises and Dreams and I shouldn’t get to close to those who give me back apathy, amongst other things, but I do anyway. Like Icarus, my wings melt away and plummet. We both know better and we do it anyway. I’m loyal, supportive, and optimistic to a fault. All men choose how they die, and I’m sure I will in service to others. The question is: will anyone lament me?

P.S.: It’s roughly a 5’x4′ painting. It’s big.
