Promise: 1) A binding contract that will be fulfilled exactly as stated, or better, by the promiser to the promisee, lest the promiser lose things of value: material or immaterial. 2) An utterly useless tactic used by the honorless for selfish gain with no intention of actual repayment. The empty promise will be forgotten, argued, and re-negotiated at earliest convenience and has no intrinsic value. 3) A device that separates the permanent from the temporary.
