(on the dangers of fox as an organization)
…As I’ve commented elsewhere – Does ‘News’ have a legally enforceable standard? Is it licensed and enforced?
I’d love to make that happen if for no other reason than for the offenders to simply stop pretending, and for those remaining bastions of objective journalism to shine and be relied upon (perhaps even thrive under a trusted label)
It isn’t about the government restricting speech but informing the consumer of the product. Fox ‘Entertainment’ (or whatever new title they would adapt) would keep spreading their hatred unfortunately, until the market says otherwise but hopefully it could go a ways when helping people understand differences between fact and opinion, and objective vs subjective.
Reagan during the Iran-Contra shit tried to pass off “A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions tell me that’s true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not.” I recommend the next time you’re caught doing something you’re not supposed to – be it stealing a cookie or having an affair to use a line like this and see how it goes.
Having a stringent, enforced, News license and standard could help when one side is sourcing news and the other memes from facebook. It’s kind of like that already but with the extra credibility it could go even further to the other people paying attention….
