(on forgiveness)
…Learning from our mistakes is crucial to the human experience, both from the ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’ and the forgiveness aspect.
It is one thing to be unwilling to forgive Moscow Mitch for years of damage to all three branches of government, but an everyday citizen who made a mistake and wants to atone for it? Attitudes like that contribute to America having 25% of the global population of prisoners – this idea of atonement being impossible.
Forgiveness also helps weaken the barriers that tribalism raises, and allows people to ‘jump ship’ which isn’t always easy to challenge one’s perspectives, beliefs, etc., and understand you were wrong and need to act – and then resist the group pressures not to act beyond that.
A lot of people are redeemable, I would wager most….
